Shoppers experience major Telstra mobile outage during Black Friday sales

During the Black Friday sales weekend from 29 November through 1 December, shoppers using Telstra mobile services experienced difficulty using their devices at Chadstone Shopping Centre during peak shopping times.

The Telstra 4G and 5G base station located at the shopping centre became overwhelmed by the number of shoppers attending Black Friday shopping events, causing some calls to fail and mobile data to become unusable during the middle of the day. Since the 3G shutdown earlier in November 2024, Telstra appears to have made no capacity upgrades to their existing 4G and 5G networks at the Chadstone Shopping Centre mobile cell tower.

Prior to the 3G shutdown, when the Telstra 4G/5G networks were overwhelmed, customers could still utilise 3G to make and receive calls and use mobile data without disruption.

Customers using other network operators (Optus and Vodafone) were mostly unaffected, as those operators had made sufficient investments in improving network capacity at major sites such as Chadstone Shopping Centre.

Update 26 Dec 2024: Telstra customers have again experienced mobile service difficulty at Chadstone Shopping Centre during the pre-Christmas and Boxing Day sales due to the high number of people in the area, causing network capacity on the Telstra mobile networks to become oversaturated.
