Stonnington Council make a killing as shopping frenzy continues on Boxing Day
Fri, 26 Dec 2008 02:44 pm
By Admin

Boxing day 2008 at Chadstone Shopping Centre had all the signs of a traditional boxing day sale, with most shops offering discounts of between 30% and 65%. Many customers waited until after Christmas to take advantage of the mass-markdowns on offer. Crowds were as strong as the pre-Christmas sales. Some of the smaller stores had to resort to making customers
queue up outside the shopfront to avoid overcrowding and the possibility of theft.
Over 50,000 shoppers flowed through the doors this morning according to Stephen deWaele, the Centre's Manager. At least 50,000 more are expected to visit the centre by close of business at Midnight.
Popular stores included the retail giants Myer and David Jones, whilst smaller clothing and boutique stores also proved to be winners as shoppers looked for heavily discounted sale goods.

Dozens of motorists have been fined for unwittingly parking in the surrounding streets of Chadstone Shopping Centre, especially along the section of Capon St running alongside the Coles multilevel carpark and the adjoining Middle Road service lane. With most of the internal carparks full, frustrated shoppers are looking elsewhere for parking without ascertaining whether parking restrictions apply or not. Council parking inspectors have been patrolling the area all day, and at times all vehicles parked along Capon Street without a valid Stonnington parking permit
were booked for being illegally parked. The
pentalty is $113.00 per offence.
The Centre will be open until midnight on Boxing day. Shoppers are strongly advised look twice before they choose to park in the surrounding areas or risk receiving a parking fine under Stonnington's by-laws.

With the recent re-opening of the 2nd level Coles carpark, plus the bridge-joined top-level carpark above Goldcross Cycles/1st Choice Liquor, shoppers should have less trouble finding a parking space. The carpark above Goldcross has shadecloth shelter, making it ideal for use on hot days.
The 3rd (top level) Coles carpark has nearly been fully constructed and is available for use by Boxing day customers. Although the top level carpark is not fully complete, the Centre decided to open it anyway to alleviate parking woes on Boxing day. "We have 1000 new car spaces, that should cut down on the tradition of carpark stalking" said Stephen deWaele.
Around 100,000 shoppers are expected to make the trip to Chaddy this Boxing Day.
As was the case on the 23
rd and 24
th, the police will most likely make their presence known again.

Chadstone flooded with shoppers during 24-hour Xmas blitz

At least 117,000 shoppers flooded through the doors of Chadstone Shopping Centre yesterday and last night, quashing any fears of slow sales due to the recession.
And with another six hours to go, another 90,000 shoppers are expected to make the last minute trip on Christmas Eve to buy gifts.
Shops are still selling the same quantity of goods as last year, albeit at a lower price. The last minute panic rush will be what store owners need to make up for the lower revenue this year.
Centre manager Stephen deWaele told news sources that the number of shoppers visiting Chadstone during the Christmas shopping rush was 'unrivalled' wordwide.
With Boxing Day 2008 still to come, total spending at Chadstone this Christmas could be one of the biggest in history.
