The secluded residential and footpath areas surrounding Middle Rd, Webster Street bridge
and Capon Street have been the target of persistent vandalism and graffiti. Even the prominent, trademark black 'Chadstone' sign on the side of the bridge has proven it is not immune from criminals applying stickers and graffiti. Several sections of the perspex windows near the bridge have been scribbled upon with abrasives, and concreted areas have been sprayed.
Ever since the area was grade separated from traffic, vandals have found the place much more appealing. With much less traffic in the area, vandals have increased opportunity to apply graffiti without being seen.
The effect will be drastic if no action is taken - once graffiti and damage starts taking hold, it has a tendency to snowball. It also affects residents in nearby properties. Vandalism generates a feeling of an insecurity
for the area and has the potential to reduce property values. With Stonnington Council
responsible for the upkeep of the area, council rates may also rise.
Persons who have seen vandalism take place should report it to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
or to their local police station.
